Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate detailed knowledge of approaches to research in sport and exercise science.

Critically analyze existing literature from a methodological viewpoint.

Demonstrate competence in using SPSS for advanced statistical analysis and interpretation.

Demonstrate knowledge of research design.

Aims

Research is central to the development of knowledge within most academic disciplines and Sport & Exercise Science is no exception. Understanding how to conduct research is important in enabling students to critically analyze existing research and to conduct an independent research project in the final year of their degree. Research Methods is therefore a key module in the portfolion of any undergraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Science. The aim of this module is to further develop students' understanding of research methods and methods of data analysis. The module introduces students to more advanced concepts and methods of data anlysis than those covered in the introductory module, SS19120 and encourages students to develop a more critical understanding of the research process. The module also provides the student with essential preparation needed to conduct an independent research project in their final year.

Brief description

This module is concerned with developing students' knowledge and understanding of research methods and statistics to an advanced level, enabling them to take a more sophisticated approach to material in other modules, and to enable them to undertake with confidence an extended independent investigation in the final year of their degree. Research methodologies will be considered in detail. Examples from existing literature wil be studied to help students apply concepts in practice. The module will also be concerned with developing skills in data anlaysis using SPSS. The module finishes with preparatory work for the Level 3 dissertation. A range of teaching methods will be employed within the module.

Lectures - to introduce key concepts in research and data analysis.

Computer workshops - to introduce students to the analysis and reporting of quantitative data collected in research.

Seminars - to offer opportunities to consolidate and apply knowledge developed in lectures.
