Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Use remote sensing software appropriately to display, interpret and analyse remote sensing data.

Convey understanding of the underlying theories and background to remote sensing.

Convey understanding of the ability of remote sensing data to be used in a wide range of applications

Demonstrate wider understanding of the literature on the application of remote sensing technologies to environmental problems.

Brief description

This module will introduce students to remote sensing data acquired by a range of airborne and satellite sensors. The module is split into two parts, the first introduces the background theory on which the subject is built and the second focuses on applications of remotely sensed data across a broad range of environmental disciplines. Following the completion of this module, students should be able to undertake basic analysis of remotely sensed data and be in a position to be an intelligent customer for acquiring expert services in remote sensing for future employers.

Content

The module is primarily taught through 10 lectures, which are split into two blocks (theory and practice).

The first 5 lectures are focused on the background theory and fundamentals of remote sensing, which need to be understood to appropriately discuss the application of this data to real world scenarios. The following 4 lectures are focused on particular application themes, which include terrestrial vegetation, glaciology, hydrology and employability within the field. The final lecture slot is given over to revision ahead of the exam.

Computer based practicals will also be undertaken to provide students with skills in basic remote sensing data analysis, primarily image classification. To aid the interpretation of the images field visits to the Aberystwyth area (usually walking from campus) will also be undertaken.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Understanding and appropriately using the satellite imagery requires the application of mathematics.
Communication Presentation of data analysis results and interpretation through a written report.
Improving own Learning and Performance The computer based practicals go alongside the assignment where the students are working and improving their data analysis week by week forming the basis for their assignment.
Information Technology The assignment is reliant on the application of image processing software to aid the interpretation of the satellite imagery.
Personal Development and Career planning Knowledge of careers in remote sensing is specifically covered
Problem solving Field and computer-based interpretation of remotely sensed data
Research skills Review of up-to-date literature relating to remote sensing applications.
Subject Specific Skills Specific skills in interpretation satellite imagery for environmental applications.
Team work Group work during field interpretation of remotely sensed data.
