Learning Outcomes
This module will provide students with a basic grounding in reading German texts, in order that they might pursue more advanced literary study at Level 2 and 3 of their degree. Students should feel confident in discussing different literary genres, understanding issues such as narrative and poetic voice, the use of language, symbolism, structure etc. They will begin to develop an awareness of German cultural history since the late nineteenth century, as well as further broaden their ability to read German.
Brief description
A study of various German literary genres, drawing on the following texts:-
Franz Wedekind: Fruehlingserwachen (Reclam)
Franz Kafka: Die Verwandlung (Reclam)
Stephan Heym, Auf Sand gebaut (Anthology of Short Stories)
Students are also recommended to obtain the appropriate Erlauterungen und Dokumente (Reclam) volumes for the Wedekind and Kafka.
An increasing number of A-level qualified students are embarking on their study of university studies in German without training in the reading and study of literary texts. The purpose of this module is, therefore, in part to provide an introduction to this activity by means of linguistically accessible and relatively short texts. At the same time, it is intended to engage those students who have received such training and to develop their interest in literary study.
