Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Develop and consolidate a systematic and coherent body of knowledge of the history of media in Wales and of contemporary debates about the media in Wales.
2. Understand, compare and critically evaluate theories about the historical development of the media in Wales and the nature of the contemporary media.
3 . Apply knowledge and understanding to a critical assessment of contemporary problems relating to the media in Wales.
Brief description
Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to study the history of, and critical issues in, the media in Wales. Through this module students will gain systematic body of knowledge about the evolution of the media, particularly broadcasting in Wales, and be able to understand and critically review the main theories and debates about the development and contemporary nature of the media in Wales.
Content
10 x 2 hour Lecture/Seminars
Lecture/seminar content:
- Theories about the media in Wales (I and II)
- The emergence and influence of the press, 1800-2000
- The birth of film in Wales current issues in film production
- Radio in Wales
- Television in Wales (I and II)
- Language, identity and the media in Wales, with reference to S4C
- The internet in Wales
- Communication policy in Wales.
