Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand the complexities of girls access to education in various contexts.

Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs to enhance girls education.

Analyse key international policy in regards to gender equality.

Evaluate case studies and present these in an appropriate manner for non-specialists.

Aims

To introduce a background to gender inequality
To identify issues and tensions relating to girls access to education
To evaluate and develop case studies of good practice in terms of educational interventions.

Brief description

This module will evaluate the factors that influence girls' access to education while critically analyzing case studies of education intervention programs. Students will have the opportunity to develop their own case study examples and to present these in the form of a poster.

Content

Sessions may be a combination of lectures, seminars or workshops and will include the following topics:

Session 1 - Introduction: Gender and Development
Session 2 - Gender, Equality and Human Rights
Session 3 - What factors affect girls' access to education?
Session 4 - Policy developments
Session 5 - Case Study
Session 6 - Evaluating girls' experiences of education
Session 7 - Strategies for inclusion
Session 8 - The impact of intervention programs
Session 9 - Poster development workshop
Session 10 - Gender and Higher Education in the Developing World


Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Students may analyze numerical data in researching their assignments.
Communication Students will have the opportunity to develop their written and oral communication skills. Oral presentation skills will be developed through in class discussions and written skills will be developed through the assignments. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills to communicate to different audiences through the development of the poster.
Improving own Learning and Performance Students will be required to undertake self-directed study in terms of the wider reading and assignment preparation. Attendance in sessions will enhance a range of learning skills.
Information Technology Students will develop competency in utilizing electronic sources of information through bibliographic and web based sources. Assignments 1 & 2will be submitted in a word processed format, assignment 3 will utilize appropriate design software.
Personal Development and Career planning Students will develop a range of transferable skills including time management, team work, communication and evaluative skills.
Problem solving Students will analyse a range of sources and texts as part of their independent research towards the assignments. Problem solving activities will form part of the lectures.
Research skills Students will have the opportunity to undertake independent research for their assignments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will have the opportunity to communicate educational practices and contexts to a range of audiences/ learners.
Team work Students will have the opportunity to work in groups as part of the activities during and in between lectures.
