On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe the structure and function of the equine gut
2. Apply recent advances in microbial ecology to understanding equine digestion
3. Describe the factors effecting diet degradation and digestion in the gut
4. Discuss the influence of microbial fermentation in disease states
Brief description
This module covers:
Digestive anatomy, the role of microbial populations in the equine Consequences for nutrient requirements and rationing in managing the horses gut and preventing digestive upsets

Content
In the taught part of the course we will focus on the digestion in the horse and the most recent advances in understanding digestive function
In the second, student-directed half of the module students will evaluate a range of dietary ingredients in a laboratory environment and use the information obtained to formulate rations for horse susceptible to digestive disorders
