Brief description
This module introduces students to basic principles of EC Environmental Law. The module focuses in particular on three key issues. Firstly, the potential conflict between free trade and environmental protection policies in the EC. Secondly, what tools of regulation are adopted in order to implement EC environmental policy and thirdly, the relationship between EC and national law and policy.
The module starts off with a general introduction to basic aspects of the European Union and its legal structure. Hence, no prior knowledge of EU law is required for studying this module. This is followed by a discussion of the fundamental policy aim of EC environmental regulation - sustainability. The module also considers different tools of EC environmental regulation, the process of creating EC environmental law and the various legal doctrines which regulate the relationship between EC and national environmental law.
