Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate critically the concept of the region and its application in a policy context
  2. Describe and analyse the way in which various forces are transforming regions
  3. Discuss and evaluate the application of different theoretical perspectives for understanding regional policy and governance
  4. Describe, compare and analyse policies and mechanisms for regional governance
  5. Apply theoretical perspectives and concepts to a specific case study

Brief description

The module provides a broad introduction to regional change and policy. The module seeks to address these issues from both a critical academic and applied perspectives. There will a strong emphasis throughout on understanding the theoretical underpinnings of academic work on regional change and policy, as well as charting the ways in which ideas have been translated into policy practice. There is, thus, a strong emphasis on developing student employability skills and prospects within the module.

In order to enable this module to connect to GGM3320, a number of environmentally-based case studies will be discussed and the relevance of environmental thinking will be emphasised.

Content

The module will be taught across ten seminars/workshops and one site visit, covering the following themes:
1. Defining regions
2. Devolution and regional governance
3. Globalization and regional change
4. The new regionalism
5. Learning regions and innovation
6. The region and rural and urban development
7. The resilient region
8. Preserving regional culture and heritage
9. Social exclusion, participation and regional policy
10. Regionalising the behaviour change agenda

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Students will be encouraged to interrogate statistics, particularly in the context of the policy report
Communication Oral communication will be developed through the seminars but not assessed. Written communication will be assessed through the essay and policy report.
Improving own Learning and Performance This will be developed through the seminars in which students will be encouraged to reflect on the formative feedback provided to them but this skill will not be addressed.
Information Technology The student's use of IT will be assessed through the essay and policy report.
Personal Development and Career planning The module emphasises employability skills, particularly in relation to policy research and in terms of developing links with potential employers, but these skills will not be formally assessed.
Problem solving Problem solving will be encouraged and assessed through the essay and policy report.
Research skills Research skills will be developed and assessed through the essay and policy report.
Subject Specific Skills Students may interrogate and evaluate graphical images and maps produced within policy documents in order to justify forms of governance.
Team work Team work will be developed within the seminars but will not be formally
