Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Develop and consolidate a systematic and coherent body of knowledge of the history of media in Wales and of contemporary debates about the media in Wales.
2. Understand, compare and critically evaluate theories about the historical development of the media in Wales and the nature of the contemporary media.
3 . Apply knowledge and understanding to a critical assessment of contemporary problems relating to the media in Wales.

Brief description

The subject matter of this module will be the emergence of the press, film and broadcasting in Wales since the nineteenth century. It will also examine the range of issues which confront those who seek to understand the nature and future development of the media in contemporary Wales. It draws on history and critical social theory to advance these ends.

Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to study the history of, and critical issues in, the media in Wales. Through this module students will gain systematic body of knowledge about the evolution of the media, particularly broadcasting in Wales, and be able to understand and critically review the main theories and debates about the development and contemporary nature of the media in Wales.

Content

Course delivery:

10 x 2 hour Lecture/Seminars

Lecture/seminar content:

  • Theories about the media in Wales (I and II)
  • The emergence and influence of the press, 1800-2000
  • The birth of film in Wales current issues in film production
  • Radio in Wales
  • Television in Wales (I and II)
  • Language, identity and the media in Wales, with reference to S4C
  • The internet in Wales
  • Communication policy in Wales.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number An understanding of some aspects of the application of number, i.e. some experience reading and interpreting tabulated data.
Communication Skills of oral communication will be developed in the seminars.
Improving own Learning and Performance The work in seminars, and the reading will cumulatively aid students in developing across the course. As will feedback on Essay 1.
Information Technology Students will have to use IT in their essay preparation and research.
Personal Development and Career planning Not developed
Problem solving Students will explore problems in the history of the media which will be developed through seminars and coursework.
Research skills In addition to developing a critical understanding of the methods used to write media history, students will be directed as to how to conduct bibliographical research on their subjects. This will be reflected in their essays
Team work Seminar work will be conducted in groups.
