Brief description
This module provides students with the opportunity to consider education polices and perspectives across different countries of the world. Students will be able to distinguish between different social and political perspectives on the role of education. Throughout the module, students will develop their research and analytical skills in understanding factors which influence educational policy across the world.
Aims
Develop students' knowledge and understanding of the effects of political, social and historical contexts on the development of educational policy.
Provide opportunities to critically analyse and evaluate educational policy and apply key principles across education systems.
Content
Session 1 (2 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) What is education? Values and ideologies
Session 2 (2 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) What is education? Values and ideologies – comparing and contrasting case studies
Session 3 (2 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) Locating education historically and politically
Session 4 (2 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) Reflective learning, analysis and research preparation
Session 5 (2 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) Case study 1: Setting the scene
Session 6 (2 hour seminar, + 1 hour seminar) Case study 1: Practical
