- demonstrate technical proficiency in the operation of field instruments
- demonstrate proficiency in field, graphical, sampling and geophysical methods
- classify major rock types
- construct a basic geological map
- appreciate the logistics involved in undertaking different types of fieldwork operations
- demonstrate an ability to analyse data and present results of original field measurements in a technically-sound report
- demonstrate proficiency in oral communication skills
Aims
On completion of this module, students should have acquired greater expertise in the basic field and communication skills introduced in the first-year course, together with additional skills such as field, graphical, sampling, and geophysical methods, the production of geological maps, and a greater breadth of field experience.
Brief description
This module centres on two field courses: one normally held during the September preceding 2nd year studies, and emphasising field techniques, the other held during the Easter vacation, and aimed at broadening the student's experience of field-based issues relevant to the Environmental Earth Science course. The module includes tutorial classes, and other meetings ancillary to the fieldwork.
