Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Use software in a confident way to solve basic IT tasks, such as:
1. Using a spreadsheet to solve a real world problem
2. Using publishing software such as Publisher.
3. Using Presentation software such as Powerpoint
4. Creating a simple database
5. Using html to create a web page
Aims
The module aims to increase students' speed and fluency at using IT packages.
Brief description
This module continues the gentle introduction to the areas of Computing that are usually considered 'Information Technology', such as producing documents, setting up of spreadsheets, building simple web pages, etc.
Content
This module will be taught entirely in a computer lab. Each week students will be introduced to a piece of software and then asked to use it in a small task.
Week 4: publishing using a package. Using Publisher or similar. Images and copyright. Task: produce a 2 page newsletter. Summative 10%.
Week 5: spreadsheets and their uses. Using advanced features of Excel or similar. Task: produce a spreadsheet using advanced features including formulae and graphs. Summative 20%.
Week 6: presentations. Task: Produce a small set of slides to describe an interest. Use at least one advanced feature of Powerpoint. Summative 20%.
Week 7 and 8: databases. What is a database? What is a table? How are databases used? Task: Creating a single table database using Access or similar. Summative 20%.
Week 9: an introduction to the internet and the web. Your online presence - what does it say about you? Task: produce a document that analyses what your current presence says about you. Contrast that with a professional IT consultant. Summative 10%.
Week 10: producing a web page: Use html to produce a web page that describes an interest. Give correct attribution to any images used. Task produce such a web page(s). Summative 20%.
Week 11: what next? What is programming? An introduction to programming - what are the main features of a programming language? Why is what you have done so far not programming?.
