Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Use software in a confident way to solve very basic IT tasks, such as:
1. Using the University network
2. Producing a professional document
3. Reviewing a peer's document
4. Basic spreadsheets and formulae.
Content
This module will be taught entirely in a computer lab. Each week students will be introduced to a piece of software and then asked to use it in a small task.
Week 1: finding your way around a computer network. Task: set up your workspace on the University computers and demonstrate. Summative 10%.
Week 2: producing documents in a professional way. Using advanced features of Word or similar. Task: produce a professional style document and review that produced by a peer. Summative 40%.
Week 3: introduction to spreadsheets. Using formulae In Excel to produce a table to solve a problem. Task: add a table to document and review that produced by a peer. Summative 50%.

Aims
The module aims to increase students’ speed and fluency at using the computing equipment at Aberystwyth, with an emphasis on skills necessary for their future course.
Brief description
This module provides a gentle introduction to using IT at University. The emphasis will be on using University systems effectively to produce documents and basic spreadsheets.
