Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Integrate scientific, regulatory and practical issues.

2. Present their findings in the generic format required for a consultant's report.

3. Evaluate data arising from an investigation in terms of its reliability and fitness for purpose.

4. Conduct searches using library, IT and database sources.

5. Use information arising from prior investigations to develop practical solutions to stated restoration or conservation problems.

Brief description

This module will introduce students to the management of restoration and conservation issues in temperate ecosystems through a series of case study based exercises. It will involve substantial student-centred activity.

Aims

To develop student skills in evaluating and interpreting existing datasets for the purpose of making management recommendations.

Content

The course will comprise a series of lectures introducing three major case study topics. In each case, introductory lectures will be followed by workshops reviewing the information provided and the assignment brief to be addressed.
Emphasis will be placed on management strategies, including stakeholder concepts and the practical/financial constraints within which these strategies must be applied. Students will learn how to evaluate available evidence and to draw appropriate conclusions to different biological and ecological questions based on partial and imperfect information.
The coursework will encourage students to apply skills developed in other course modules to analyse and interpret the data to formulate management plans.
The course will be delivered in 3 week cycles linked to individual case studies.
