Brief description
This module provides a comprehensive survey of the art scene and its theoretical, social and cultural contexts from 1960 - the present. It aims to provide students with an understanding of a range of political, social and institutional forces, such as: the questioning of Modernism as an orthodoxy; the rejection of traditional media and materials in the making of art; counter-cultural influences in rethinking the role of art in society; the role of Feminism and gender and identity politics in challenging the status quo of art history and traditional practices of Fine Art; the rise of Post-Modernism as a theoretical position in relation to visual culture; the mediating and formative roles of critics, collectors, gallery owners and curators; the impact of a variety of new media in making and viewing recent and current artistic production.
Content
The lecture topics will cover the historical material in roughly chronological order while, at the same time, will be broadly thematic in content. This will allow for some cross-referencing between lecture topics. The seminars will typically consist of group discussion of key texts and/or key works of art to relate to contextual issues, historical and current criticism and theory, and manifestos of movements or ‘schools’ of art. Together the two forms of delivery will provide an in-depth account of the issues arising in the period 1960 - the present. Typically, lectures will cover the following topics:

3 Expanded Fields: Arte Povera and Fluxus
4 Challenges to Art History: Feminist interventions in theory and practice
5 Beyond the Gallery: Land Art, Performance and the Happening
6 ‘New Image’ and ‘Neo-Expressionism’: Painting in the 1970s and ’80s
7 Postmodernism: Criticism and Practice
8 Photography, Video and the Artist’s Film
9 Galleries, Collections and Exhibitions in the 1990s
10 New Art Now: Globalism and New Media

Frame a response to questions and develop a written argument on appropriate material in both essay and examination answers. 4. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of appropriate bibliographic and other research materials. 5. Develop critical skills and language through the following activities: the close reading of set texts for seminar discussion; the formulation of a considered response to the essay questions; responding to questions in the examination. |
