Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate competence with the implementation methods and tools used in the development of the types of intelligent system considered in this scheme.
2. Show proficiencly in building intelligent systems using the appropriate tools.
3. Demonstate skills in designing, running and documenting experiments with intelligent systems.
4. Demonstrate capability to create a detailed project proposal.
Brief description
Students will participate in lab work designed to give them practical experience of the various types of intelligent system that are considered in this course. They will work in small groups on 3 short projects that will introduce them to the tools and techniques that are used in the development of applied intelligent systems. The emphasis will be on software systems, and will stress the idea of an Intelligent System as a software agent assisting in a knowledge-based decision-making process. Students will be encouraged to think beyond the immediate problems in order to develop an in-depth understanding of the topic areas such that they can make well-informed decisions about their dissertation topic. Students will then write a proposal for their dissertation work, based on their practical work in this module.
Content
Introduction to agents, characteristics, multi-agent systems, building agent-oriented systems.
2. Tools for building systems (2 hours)
Reflect back on building world models, reactive systems and how the example environments impact on their usefulness.
3. Introduction to laboratory projects (2 hours)
4. Practical experience (40 hours in lab)
Developing intelligent software systems to fulfil particular roles.
5. Prepare dissertation proposal (3 x 1 hour tutorials)
