Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identify and critically analyse the key areas of psychopathology/mental health in relation to offending;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to evaluate the context and the social issues involved in understanding mental disorder;
3. Demonstrate a critical appreciation of the limitations in the identification and treatment of psychological problems;
4. Identify the key areas of research and sources of information (e.g. DSM);
5. Critically analyse and evaluate the literature in psychopathology.

2. Assessment tools (e.g. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM));
3. Neurological impairment e.g. The Criminal Brain;
4. Developmental disorders;
5. Substance addiction;
6. Learning disorders e.g. Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism;
7. Treatment and prevention.

Brief description
Psychopathology and general mental health issues are becoming increasingly prominent in discourse surrounding crime, imprisonment, and the treatment/rehabilitation of offenders. The module will address the main areas that have been identified as problematic in relation to crime and offending and enable students to appreciate their etiology and prevalence.
Delivering an introduction to the key areas surrounding the identification and treatment of psychopathology and mental health, the module will focus on those areas of mental illness related to offending and criminal behaviour. It will also enable students to recognize the various types of psychopathology and their origins.
