Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a detailed understanding of animal immunology, bacteriology and parasitology, both at the molecular and applied level
Apply this knowledge to animal disease, and so understand disease etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention
Evaluate the various means of disease diagnosis and control, with particular reference to current research
Brief description
A series of approximately 22 lectures (10 Immunology, 6 Bacteriology and 6 Parasitology)
The aims of the module are:
To investigate in detail animal immunology, bacteriology and parasitology both at the molecular and applied level
To apply this knowledge to animal disease, and so understand disease etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention
To understand the principles of disease diagnosis and control
It will achieve this by considering the following areas
Key components of the immune system
Immunological aspects of reproduction, stress and exercise
Key features of hypersensitivities, deficiencies and autoimmune diseases
Principles, merits and limitations of immuno-diagnostic tests and vaccinations
Principles of integrated programmes for the control of parasites
Principles governing the selection of appropriate anthelmintics
Approaches used for the isolation and identification of bacterial pathogens
Means by which bacteria are able to cause disease
Procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections.
