Students using the Digital Discovery Tool Independently

Most Foundation Year and Year 1 students will have the opportunity through their departments to both complete the Digital Discovery Tool and to discuss their individual reports. If you haven’t been offered this opportunity, please follow the steps below.

All other Undergraduate and Postgraduate students will be supported to use the Digital Discovery Tool from 2023/24, however you are more than welcome to use it now, and you are encouraged to follow the steps below.

Step 1: Access and complete the Digital Discovery Tool

Watch the video below to learn more about the Digital Discovery Tool and to learn how to complete the appropriate question set:

FAQ: Which question set should I complete?

If you need any support to access or complete the Digital Discovery Tool, please contact your Subject Librarian. You can either make an email enquiry to librarians@aber.ac.uk or book using the online appointment calendar.

Step 2: Read your report

Once you have completed the self-assessment questionnaire, you will receive your Digital Discovery Tool report. This will include:

  • An overview of your digital profile
  • Suggested actions to take
  • Links to useful resources, which will support the development of each individual capability

Take the time to read through your report, using it to help you identify and reflect which of your digital capabilities you would like to develop further. These may relate to your future plans, your studies, or they may just be an area you are interested in exploring and developing further.

Here's a quick video explaining a little more about your report:

Step 3: Create an action plan

To help you plan which digital capabilities you are going to develop further, and how you are going to achieve this, we recommend that you download and complete the action plan below.

Tip: Use the feedback from your report to help you create your action plan. The guidance offers valuable feedback on ways to expand your digital capabilities in each key area and suggests the next steps for you based on your answers and proficiency scores. Recommendations could include completing an e-learning course, carrying out a survey or creating a guide yourself.

If you would like to discuss your individual Digital Discovery Tool report in further detail, you can contact your Subject Librarian or departmental Careers Consultant.

Step 4: Explore the Resource Bank

You will find many recommended resources in the Resource Bank section of the Discovery Tool, available from the main Digital Discovery tool page.

Here's a quick overview of the Resource Bank:

Step 5: Re-take the Digital Discovery Tool

You can re-take the Digital Discovery Tool at any time, and we would encourage all students to re-take the Digital Discovery Tool at least once a year.

Why? Repeating the same question set allows you to see how your digital capabilities have changed over time, especially if you have been working on improving particular areas.

Once you have completed the same question set more than once, you can compare the results from your reports.
