At the Knowledge Exchange Hub at IBERS, Aberystwyth University, we are dedicated to fostering innovation and practical solutions within the Welsh agricultural community. A recent collaboration facilitated through the Farming Connect Programme exemplifies this commitment, demonstrating how knowledge exchange and peer-to-peer learning can drive positive change on Welsh farms.

Using Technology to Secure Farm Water Supplies

Dai Evershed, an IBERS researcher who returned to his family's farm in Ceredigion in 2022, has been implementing LoRaWAN technology with the assistance of IBERS specialists and supported by Farming Connect, to monitor water levels, detect leaks, and ensure efficient use of his farm’s limited spring water supply. This innovative approach enhances water security, reduces wastage, and provides real-time insights into water management.

Recognising the potential of this technology, Powys sheep farmer Aled Haynes sought mentorship from Dai to apply similar solutions on his own farm. Through Farming Connect, Aled was able to learn from Dai’s experiences and adopt a cost-effective, data-driven method to monitor and protect his farm’s water resources. This mentoring relationship has given Aled the confidence and practical knowledge to invest in technology that reduces the risk of water shortages, improves farm resilience, and ensures sustainability in the face of increasing climate variability.

Dai recently gave a presentation about this collaboration at an IBERS Knowledge Exchange Hub workshop, which was organised to foster relationships between researchers and the farming community. His insights into the practical benefits of LoRaWAN technology and the role of peer-to-peer mentoring provided valuable lessons for other farmers looking to implement similar solutions.

Aligning with IBERS’ Strategic Aims

This partnership directly aligns with the strategic aims of IBERS, which focus on:

  • Sustainable land and water management – By encouraging the adoption of smart monitoring systems, IBERS is supporting Welsh farmers in managing natural resources more efficiently.
  • Knowledge exchange and applied research – Facilitating peer-to-peer learning through Farming Connect and other knowledge exchange pathways that ensure cutting-edge innovations reach the farming community in an accessible, practical way.
  • Resilience in agriculture – By integrating technology to improve water security, farmers can mitigate climate-related risks and enhance their long-term productivity.

At IBERS, we are proud to support initiatives like the Farming Connect Programme, which bring together farmers, researchers, and industry experts to drive innovation and sustainability in Welsh agriculture. The success of Dai and Aled’s collaboration highlights the power of knowledge exchange in helping farmers tackle real-world challenges while working towards a more resilient and productive farming sector.
