The Farming and Agriculture in Wales summer school, running from 8th until 29th July 2022, is a three-week cultural and academic programme focusing on contemporary issues in Farming and Agriculture, through the lens of Wales.

The Summer School provides a comprehensive overview of land use and agricultural production systems focusing on livestock agriculture, arable land use and conservation issues with a mixture of classroom lectures and experiential learning, with trips to the university’s many farms and landholdings.

The Farming and Agriculture in Wales summer school takes place in Aberystwyth University’s Department of Life Sciences, an internationally-recognised research and teaching centre renowned for research in response to global challenges such as food security, bioenergy and sustainability, and the impacts of climate change.

It is also home to the National Plant Phenomics Centre, and the BEACON Centre of Excellence for Biorefining.

 

Highlights

Students will be able to:

  • Learn a little of the Welsh language
  • Explore the theme of the programme through participating in round table discussions
  • Explore the beautiful countryside of mid-Wales, including a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Trips will include:

  • The Royal Welsh Show – the pinnacle event in the British agricultural calendar
  • Pwllpeiran Upland Research Platform
  • BEACON Biorefining Centre.

There will be no additional cost to the students for any of the activities undertaken as part of the programme.

Eligibility

The programme is broad enough to engage students from a variety of subject backgrounds. If you are in any doubt, please get in touch!

We ask that you are over 18 years of age, already studying at college or university, with a minumum GPA of 3.0, and that you are ready and open for lively debate and discussion.

Acceptances will be made on a rolling basis, as there are a limited numbers of places, applications may close early.

Academics and credits

The summer school is credit-bearing. Students will receive credit to transfer to their home institution if they successfully complete the course. The academic component will entail the completion of a 10 UK credit module (3 US credits) including a journal, presentation, and a written assignment.

Outdoor activity

The Summer School will, of course, include a lot of outdoor activity, plenty of hiking and possibly some rain!
