Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand how the interaction between clinical knowledge and communication skills may lead to more efficient and effective consultations.

Show an understanding of what it means to be a professional and the responsibilities to clients, patients and wider society that this entails.

Demonstrate knowledge of ethical theories and ethical implications within the veterinary field under examination conditions.

Understand the importance of evidence based veterinary medicine and how to ask a clinical question and search for valid evidence.

Be able to demonstrate how module content can be applied to clinical settings and how it integrates with other modules

Brief description

Principles of Veterinary Practice & Evidence Based Medicine 1 module runs throughout Year 1 and introduces a number of important themes including professionalism, ethics, communication skills and the basic principles of evidence based veterinary medicine. The module develops reflective skills and critical thinking and has a particular focus on the context of the veterinary profession in Wales.

Content

The development of professional skills, professionalism and understanding the value of evidence-based medicine is an essential part of your education, particularly for those intending to pursue careers as practicing Veterinary Surgeons. This module has been designed so that you can both acquire and hone the range of skills which will be essential for your ability to succeed in, and enjoy, your future career. These skills include communication (consultation and presentational skills), team-working, evaluating evidence and clinical reasoning, ethical reasoning and professional attitudes.

Adaptability and resilience Outside the formal contact hours, students will be expected to research materials, manage time and meet deadlines for the coursework. This aspect is not assessed
Co-ordinating with others Small group learning will encourage students to communicate, assess and present information as a team. This aspect is not assessed.
Creative Problem Solving Small group learning/Practical classes and coursework will involve problem solving and exam.
Critical and analytical thinking The coursework and exam will require students to research topics beyond the depth and scope of the lecture material. Information from a variety of sources will be used. Research skills will be assessed in the coursework. Data interpretation of data will be taught and assessed in the coursework.
Digital capability Accessing the web for reliable information sources and using databases to find literature in preparation for the exam and coursework.
Professional communication Students will develop effective written communication skills in the coursework plus exam and oral communication in the oral presentation, where these will be assessed. Feedback for this will be given.
Real world sense This module will develop communication skills, reflective learning and critical thinking skills. These elements are not explicitly assessed
Subject Specific Skills During the module, students will gain knowledge of veterinary and biological terminology assessed in the exam and coursework.
