Students will work on the realization of a Shakespearean text. They will be allocated as a member of the performance, production or scenographic team and will create a performance aimed at upper primary or secondary school children. Students will also devise and construct educational workshops based on the text and the production for the targeted audience. In addition, students will critically reflect on the text, and contemporary rehearsal and production processes. The production will be directed by a member of Departmental staff or other experienced theatre practitioner.

This module focuses on the development, rehearsal and staging of a performance event and accompanying educational workshop for a public audience of upper primary or secondary schoolchildren. Working under the guidance of a member of departmental staff or an experienced theatre practitioner, students will engage in an original piece of theatre making using a selected Shakespearean text and an accompanying educational workshop. Students will be allocated roles appropriate to the production (for example, as assistant directors, actors/performers, stage managers, scenographers or any combination of the above) and the project will involve working for at least 16 hours per week during the semester. Guided by the project director, students will apply appropriate compositional and rehearsal strategies to developing their production while also reflect upon and evaluating critically their experience of working on the production. Students will be required to create, lead and participate in peer-led rehearsals and form their own strategies for investigating, experimenting and working on the text within the guidelines set. During the production project students will encounter specific performance challenges and performance research questions and will be required to compile reflective documentation in which they contextualise their experience through a developed and sensitive understanding and analysis of appropriate performance theories, and rehearsal and compositional methods. Throughout the project students will be expected to work responsibly, constructively, creatively and safely with fellow students, solving problems as they arise and undertaking the specific challenges inherent to the nature of their project.
