Multiplicity, a powerful exhibition showcasing the work of eight exceptional global majority artists, has gone on display at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

The exhibition includes works by mid and west Wales artists of colour: Molara Adesigbin, Munise Emetullah Akhtar, Dela Anderson, Abid Hussain, Déa Neile-Hopton, Simangaliso Sibanda, Elena Tayo, and Jasmine Violet.

Conceived by artist Jasmine Violet and curated by Ffion Rhys, Multiplicity is the culmination of a six-month mentorship programme that empowered these artists to expand their creative practice.

Through masterclasses and collaboration in portraiture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, and performance led by renowned artists, this group explored themes of intersectionality, multiplicity, and identity.

Ffion Rhys said:

“It is a real privilege to host Multiplicityhere at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.  Showcasing the works of eight remarkable artists, this exhibition is a celebration of the diverse communities that shape Wales, highlighting untold stories and the profound contributions of global majority people to Welsh culture—past and present.”

Jasmine Violet, who conceived the idea for the exhibition, is an interdisciplinary artist who is pursuing her PhD at Aberystwyth University’s School of Art.  She said:

“The dream of Multiplicity could not have been realised without the unwavering support, passion, and collaboration of my fellow artists, mentors, Ffion Rhys and the Aberystwyth Art Centre Team. Their energy and dedication have been the heartbeat of this project, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to share this celebration of art and identity.”

“We invite you to immerse yourself in Multiplicity - where art, identity, and heritage converge - and to witness how when diverse voices come together it creates something truly extraordinary.”

Alongside the exhibition, a public programme of talks and workshops will offer further opportunities to engage with the themes of Multiplicity - further details are available on Aberystwyth Arts Centre website.

Multiplicity is part of Perspective(s), a wider project in collaboration with the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government Anti-racism Fund and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.

This initiative aims to redefine how the visual arts and heritage sectors reflect cultural and ethnicdiversity, challenging existing narratives through an anti-racist and decolonial lens.

Multiplicity is on display in Gallery 2 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre until 25 May.  Admission is free.
