Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Appraise different styles of leadership and management used in contemporary healthcare

Brief description
The transformation of leadership and management on a Once for Wales basis has been described as fundamental to the success of A Healthier Wales: Our plan for Health and Social Care.
HEIW (2000) recognise that leadership will be needed to instigate change, empower others and lead by example, as well as to create the conditions for continuous innovation and improvement to drive up the quality and value of health and care services. It requires leaders who will ensure a culture of wellbeing, continuous improvement, openness and psychological safety flourishes within the workforce and organisations.
This cross-field module introduces the core principles and skills underpinning compassionate leadership and effective management.

Content
This module aims to enhance student knowledge and application of the core principles and skills underpinning compassionate and collective leadership as described by HEIW (2000):
Attend – give time and listen with fascination
Understand – find out what and why
Empathise – care about the other person
Help – support / take appropriate action
The module will use a range of teaching, learning and assessment approaches to encourage students to practice these skills in a safe and simulated environment. Collective leadership requires a focus on teams, systems and inclusivity, and is underpinned by compassion and quality improvement (HEIW 2000).
Attending:
- to those we lead means being present with them. It requires that we ‘listen with fascination’ to those we lead.
Understanding:
- is dependent on listening deeply. It requires that we take the time to listen in order to understand the challenges that those we lead face in their work.
Empathising:
- is feeling the strains, pains, anxieties and frustrations of those we lead without being overwhelmed by those feelings. This then gives leaders the motivation to help or serve those we lead.
Helping:
- to ensure there’s a good path for those we lead to achieve their goals by removing the obstacles or providing the resources and supports to help them deliver high quality care.
Compassionate Leadership Principles and skills to include:
Promoting supportive and effective team and inter-team working
Promoting inclusion and diversity, actively removing barriers and boundaries
Nurturing compassionate cultures and the principles of human factors, environmental factors and strength-based approaches.
Managing conflict positively, openly, courageously and ethically
Strengthening ‘voice’, influence, and control for all staff
Supporting staff in reflection, learning and innovation
Performance management, motivation, challenge and constructive feedback
Influencing organizational change and public policy, becoming politically aware
In addition, the module will also focus on nurturing competence and confidence in students’ clinical abilities when demonstrating nursing skills within clinical practice placements, focusing on:
clinical skill development/maintenance
maintenance of All Wales passports (e.g. Manual Handling/Violence and Aggression) – updating when required
clinical learning requirements
practice supervision/assessment
clinical assessments
PAD use/evidencing work-based achievements
leading clinical care delivery

| Adaptability and resilience | Practising compassionate leadership and management will require students to be flexible and adaptable in their approach to teamworking and safe patient care delivery. Students will learn through discussions, debates and clinical scenarios that leadership may involve making challenging, emotional and tough decisions, which may not always be popular with patients, family members or wider members of the multidisciplinary team. Students will therefore require strength in their leadership abilities |
| Co-ordinating with others | In this module, students will continue to enhance their abilities in professional coordination and facilitation, demonstrating leadership and management skills. Students will be supported in a theoretical environment to make clinical decisions and lead on care delivery discussions and debates which may involve difficult and challenging elements which require due considerations |
| Creative Problem Solving | The changing nature of healthcare delivery will require all nurses to possess leadership skills – either in preparation for senior roles or for leading teams in the delivery of care. This module will introduce students to concept of compassionate leadership, and will expose them to various types of leadership styles and skills, exploring principles such as: Attending, Understanding, Empathising, Helping, Working in such a diverse setting. |
| Critical and analytical thinking | Compassionate leadership will require the students to be able to think calmly and analytically in order to respond appropriately to a range of situations. Through lectures, seminars and practical's – involving clinical scenarios and mock run-through sessions - bringing in learnt classroom knowledge with practical applications, students will begin to develop the knowledge and abilities required of a compassionate leader, ensuring equity, diversity, inclusivity, fairness are reflected. |

| Professional communication | Professional communication will be vitally important when leading/managing teams and communicating decisions, actions and appropriate information to patients, families and wider members of the multidisciplinary team. Therefore, students will build on their communication skills within this module, and they will be expected to continue to actively participate in discussions, debates and other learning activities, such as facilitating a workshop. |
| Real world sense | Both theory and practice are equally weighted within nursing curricula, meaning that it is important that classroom subjects are applicable within the practicable nature of the clinical environment, thus giving the taught component a real-world sense. All taught subjects will therefore relate back to clinical practice. Such a requirement will be reflected in this module by active participation of students in mock clinical scenarios, discussions and the facilitation of a workshop. |
| Reflection | Reflection will continue to be promoted within this module. During the third year, the clinical supervision groups are expected to be self-managed, with groups’ participants being autonomous and leading their reflective discussions. This module will also require the students to complete a reflective essay, reflecting on the use of leadership styles used in healthcare practice, and exploring their use within their own practice. |
