Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
explain the key principles underpinning effective assessment of service user needs
demonstrate knowledge of socioeconomic, psychosocial and epidemiological influences on personal health and wellbeing
outline key principles underpinning risk assessment and the prevention of harm
demonstrate the key skills involved in safer drug administration
explain the evidence base informing contemporary practice
reflect on key skills required for effective communication to enable effective professional relationships
Brief description
We will introduce the key skills associated with caring for service users across the lifespan in a variety of settings and meeting both physical and emotional needs. Communication, both written and verbal will be further developed as will reflective practice to enhance self-awareness and agency.
Aims
This is a core module as part of the 2 year blended learning programme and successful completion will see an award of Certificate of Higher Education- Certificate in Healthcare Education Level 4 (120 credits).

Human physical and psychological development across the lifespan
Exploring professional practice
Law and ethics
Introduction to identifying and managing risk and the prevention of harm
Socioeconomic, psychosocial and epidemiological influences on health and wellbeing
Introduction to the assessment of service user needs using a holistic patient centred care approach
Reflective practice
The structure and function of local and national health services
Introduction to pharmacology
Exploring professional practice, communication and developing effective professional relationships
Introduction to evidence informed practice
In addition, the module will also focus on preparing students for clinical practice placements, focusing on:
• Clinical skill development/maintenance
• Compliance with Maintenance of All Wales passports (e.g. Manual Handling/Violence and Aggression)
• Clinical learning requirements
• Practice supervision
• Clinical assessments
• PAD use/evidencing work-based achievements

Adaptability and resilience | Students’ self-care skills will be further developed in this module through exploration of self-care strategies and the sharing of learnt knowledge through student-led presentations. Peer support and practical discussions and activities will enhance and equip the student’s personal resilience toolkit, enabling them to begin to develop confidence in their nursing practice. |
Co-ordinating with others | Teamwork will be required in all aspects of nursing care, and students will be expected to actively participate in all activities and learning episode events. Students will be involved in small group work, participate in debates and discussions, and be included in mock clinical scenarios nurturing their confidence and knowledge through group learning. |
Creative Problem Solving | Students will continually be challenged to think about and discuss their approaches to varying clinical situations. Professional debates, discussions, presentations, assessment of a virtual family and involvement in mock clinical scenarios within varying contexts will further challenge the student’s thinking and knowledge and will build on their problem-solving skills. |
Critical and analytical thinking | Students will continue to be exposed to the concept of evidence-based practice, which will further develop understanding of how evidence and research influences clinical practice. By involvement in delivering presentations, conducting assessments, reflections, appraising professional literature and learning of health policy developments within healthcare, students’ critical and analytical thinking will be further enhanced. |
Digital capability | This module will require the students to continue to use/and learn how to: • use blackboard • access lectures remotely and participate accordingly • know how to search electronic databases • use the library’s electronic catalogue • submit work electronically • sit online examinations |
Professional communication | Students will be required to further develop their communication skills within this module, as they will be expected to continue to actively participate in discussions and debates. Further, they will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of how to transfer information to others, through giving presentations and conducting assessments of a virtual family. Students will demonstrate their oral and written communication skills by participating in relevant learning activities throughout module |
Real world sense | Both theory and practice are equally weighted within nursing curricula, meaning that it is important that classroom subjects are applicable within the practicable nature of the clinical environment, thus giving the taught component a real-world sense. All taught subjects will therefore relate back to clinical practice. Students will learn the importance of being exposed to learning in both the theoretical and clinical classroom. |
Reflection | Reflection will continue to be promoted within this module, and students will be encouraged to actively participate within their clinical supervision groups; and through guided reflection, students will see its use being implemented practicably to support self-awareness and ongoing learning. |
