Brief description

This module provides students with a brief overview of the financial aspects of the UK health care system followed by a more detailed introduction to the methods of economic evaluation used in health economic practice throughout the UK. The module is oriented at the microeconomic level, driven by problems often encountered in health economic practice. These typically involve economic evaluations of health interventions encountered in the areas of public health, new and novel medical device development, new surgical procedures, diagnostic tests and pharmaceuticals. Involvement alongside healthcare professionals and expert patients often features when designing and gathering data for a health economic evaluation, often undertaken through the agency of a randomised controlled clinical trial.

Aims

This module aims to introduce students to the role and skills needed by health economists in order that they may undertake economic evaluation of healthcare interventions.
