Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

developed knowledge and understanding of key terminology of Italian current affairs.

become familiar with the language of Italian newspapers, with its often highly metaphorical and rhe-torical quality.

possess a knowledge of those elements of Italian political life and of cultural issues that will allow them to understand current newspaper and magazine articles.

understand current affairs related audio-video material with a high level of complexity, in both lan-guage and context.

evaluate the contributions of different kinds of evidence to debates on Italian current affairs issues.

be able to summarise and translate into English articles from Italian magazines and newspapers with a high degree of fluency recognising the special requirements of such translations.

developed confidence in their ability to communicate in front of others and to construct arguments with appropriate use of Italian terminology and structures.

learn to present material effectively as a poster, a common way in which ideas are communicated in professional settings.

Brief description

This module aims to familiarise students with the language of current affairs as it appears in daily newspapers and weekly magazines. It also hopes to broaden the students' awareness of the reality of contemporary Italy.
Students will be expected to make use of authentic current affairs materials. Lectures will be based on current newspaper or magazine articles, and occasionally audios and videos. Students will be asked to prepare the material beforehand for discussion in class and developed their skills in producing translation, summary, text comprehension, and advanced language exercises.
Students will be asked to produce a poster based on current affairs articles, explaining or illustrating relevant aspects of Italian culture, history, or politics.

Content

The material covers a variety of perspectives on current affairs issues, such as: immigration, regionalism, the international role of Italy, the relationship between citizens and institutions, corruption, the Southern question.

Co-ordinating with others Students will be expected to discuss the weekly material and to share their findings in seminars.
Creative Problem Solving Students will be expected to address and resolve various problems posed by in-class and at home activities: selection of reading material; answering questions posed by written assessment and seminar work, and to find an adequate form of presenting their work.
Critical and analytical thinking The weekly classes and seminar preparations are based on independent work. The poster requires students to research and select material carefully.
Digital capability Students will be taught how to select suitable and reliable on-line sources of information and will practice the use of information technology to search for, prepare and present material in a poster.
Professional communication Students will be expected to engage in class discussions and to present their findings, as well as to write at an appropriate level in assignments.
Real world sense Development of communication, problem-solving, analytical skills and intercultural awareness. Transferable skills such as writing and presentation skills; IT and design skills.
Reflection Students will be able to assess their own progress week by week through their increased understanding of the issues raised and the skills developed working with a variety of sources and formats, reflecting on and adapting to feedback provided.
Subject Specific Skills Students will be taught how to approach and understand the complex language of Italian newspapers. They will expand their knowledge of Italian language and culture and will be expected to demonstrate this knowledge acquisition and application in their assessed pieces.
