Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Display advanced technical knowledge of the main grammatical and syntactical points of Scottish Gaelic.
2. Employ advanced research skills in the area of Scottish Gaelic language and literature.
3. Read, with the help of a dictionary, various prose pieces in Scottish Gaelic from the eighteenth century to the present.
4. Demonstrate familiarity with certain aspects of Scottish Gaelic oral tradition, culture and literature.
5. Demonstrate mastery of the most basic elements of Scottish Gaelic.
Brief description
An introduction to the main features of Modern Scottish Gaelic language, and an introduction to some of the highlights of its literary genres. Students must have a working knowledge of Irish to undertake this module.
Content
3 sessions per week will be devoted to the pronunciation, grammar and structure of Scottish Gaelic.
1 session per week will be devoted to the close reading and analysis of representative literary texts.
2 sessions per semester will focus on subject-specific literary and/or textual topics aimed specifically at PG students.
